Previously on Car Search, where I look at owning cars that aren't my dad's Volvo 240 wagon, I took a 45 minute bus ride to look at a pair of Volvo 242GTs that I remembered seeing in a lot last summer. Those two turned out to be basket cases, but recently I have found a car in my neighborhood that is not only running and driving, but is also a better city car than an old Volvo. There's an early 90s Mk2 Golf (big bumpers tipped me off) with a 5-speed that's in my area sometimes. Any stories about these? Do they avoid typical VW reliability issues? What do I need to look for? Is it worth asking about? It looks clean on the outside, but the interior is dirty. It could use a thorough washing, but from what I remember it was pretty solid.

NSFW - the answer is 240DL. When it's not Miata, it's 240DL. Go in peace:

They're solid cars, but dull as ditchwater. It's a transport appliance, just like a Corolla or whatnot. By this age, there's a lot of potential for some work needing doing, but if you get a decent one it should still be fairly solid.

Had a couple Volvos on the same platform - love it, and can't explain why. So basic.

The Golf? Surely not?
